Staff Java Engineer
Primary Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly motivated engineer for a Staff Software Engineering position responsible for architecture, product design, and development of eBay’s recommendations and relationship marketing system. This position requires the candidate to work closely with product and senior management, other development teams, operations and the quality assurance team. The candidate is expected to be a self-starter and team player, a strong driver for results and continuous improvement. Responsibilities include development and support for worldwide projects throughout all phases of the development cycle. Define, design, and implement highly reliable, scalable, and efficient infrastructure for eBay’s marketing business needs.
- Collaborate with eBay architects to define an open platform for eBay’s relationship marketing strategy.
- Work with other engineers, managers, and Product Management, QA, and Operations teams to develop innovative solutions with functionality to meet market needs.
- Develop realistic implementation schedules that meet development goals.
- Provide technical design vision for eBay’s merchandising/recommendations needs and articulate the vision across the company.
- Identify and resolve complex production issues quickly in eBay backend components.
- Analyze and recommend design, implementation, and monitoring tools to help with any of the preceding responsibilities.
- Must be able to independently design code and test major features, as well as work jointly with other team members to deliver complex changes.
- Share on-call responsibilities.
- Develop industry and product technical expertise.
- Document best practices and help create knowledge base.
- Create training materials for developers. Conduct training sessions.
- Facilitate Problem Diagnosis and resolution.
Job requirements
- BS/BA in CS or related field.
- 8+ years experience in requirements analysis, design, coding and unit testing of scalable, distributed, multi-tiered, fault-tolerant applications in Windows and UNIX environments.
- 3+ years as engineering lead, preferably at high-volume web companies.
- 5+ years object-oriented design methodology and application development in Java and/or C++ and J2EE, including servlets, JS, JDBC.
- Expertise required in design and implementation using relational databases (prefer Oracle).
- Experience working with other organizations such as Operations, Load & Performance, Security, Build/Release, QA and Training.
- Experience in developing and supporting a product or web-site over multiple release lifecycles.
- Outstanding presentation and written skills as well as the ability to deal effectively with both technologists and business representatives. Strong leadership skills.
- Proven results oriented person with a delivery focus. Successful deployment for a large enterprise system based on candidate’s own design efforts.
- Good time management and ability to work on concurrent assignments with different priorities
- Experience with data mining and machine learning, or content management/syndication and tracking systems for large scale and extreme performance requirements is a definite plus.
Basic Qualifications
